  • Sustainability is Built In

    April 12, 2019 2 min read

Every product we make at Holy Lamb Organics and everything from our partner companies is created with sustainability as priority one. Take a look at what’s going in to your purchase.

    Wool

Wool is a classic renewable resource. Sheep are continuously growing wool, so a yearly shearing is important to their health and well being. Our wool comes from sheep pastured in the fresh air on small owner-operated farms that use ecologically sound practices--no herbicides or pesticides. Because wool is biodegradable, at the end of its useful life it can be returned to the soil, where it decomposes, releasing valuable nitrogen-based nutrients. The wool mill we partner with is environmentally conscious in everything it does. Because no chemicals are involved at any stage of the milling process, no chemical residue is ever released into the environment.

    Latex

The latex pillows, toppers, and mattresses we offer are constructed using 100% natural Dunlop latex. Natural latex is a renewable resource that comes from the rubber tree, and our growers are FSC certified. FSC certified refers to the Forest Stewardship Council, a global nonprofit that sets standards for responsibly managed forests, ensuring environmental and social responsibility along the entire supply chain. Rubber trees can be tapped for up to 25 years; once the sap has been depleted, the trees are harvested to create furniture and other goods.

    Cotton
HLO and our partner companies use only organic cotton in our products. Conventional cotton farming accounts for 16% of the world's insecticide use and 7% of pesticide use, so choosing organic has a dramatic impact. Organic farming uses less water (utilizing rainwater for irrigation), supports greater biodiversity (companion plants and beneficial insects can thrive), and creates a healthier environment for farm workers.

    Wood

Pacific Rim Woodworking, our furniture partner, is committed to creating heirloom quality bedroom furniture while minimizing their environmental impact. Their Western Maple is harvested as a secondary item during softwood harvests. Their  hardwood supplier has received a certificate to sell “Chain of Custody” products under the Forest Stewardship Council rules, and their plywood supplier upholds the most demanding green building standards. On site, they practice conservation in everything they do.
