As summer warms, so is a global conversation that’s near and dear to our hearts here at Holy Lamb Organics—it’s Plastic Free July!
Now, before you imagine we’re all trading toothbrushes for tree bark, let’s slow it down. Plastic Free July isn’t about perfection, it’s about progress. It’s a month-long invitation to take a look at the plastics in our busy lives and find ways (big or small) to kick ‘em to the curb.
Think of it as the month to put your single use plastic choices in the hot seat.
Started over a decade ago, Plastic Free July has grown into a worldwide movement, with an astonishing 10 billion kgs of household waste prevented by participants over the last five years. All of that waste avoided, simply because millions of people choose to make a change for cleaner streets, healthy oceans, and beautiful communities.
But here’s the best part: Plastic Free July isn’t about guilt-tripping. It’s about solutions. Whether you're swapping plastic wrap for beeswax or bringing your own bags to the co-op, every small act adds up.
We know all waste comes with an environmental price tag. But plastic? It’s particularly stubborn.
Less than 5% of plastic waste is actually recycled in the U.S., and that number hasn’t budged much in the past twenty years. Meanwhile, plastic sticks around for centuries, breaking down into tiny microplastics that worm their way into our oceans, our wildlife, and even our bodies. Yikes.
The modern bedding world has leaned heavy on plastic. From polyester-filled pillows to synthetic comforters to packaging that zips up nice and small. But as we like to say around here: just because it's done that way by the masses, doesn't mean we have to follow suit.
Glad you asked!
At Holy Lamb Organics, we’ve been on a mission since day one to work towards a zero-waste, plastic-free kind of company. That means:
No synthetic fibers. We use only natural, renewable materials such as organic cotton, Premium Eco Wool, sourced from small U.S. farms, as well as GOTS Certified Organic Wool from New Zealand.
Plastic-free packaging. Our products are shipped using recyclable or compostable materials, so there’s no sneaky bubble wrap here!
Thoughtful production. We design our products with the scraps in mind. Our production team has put in the time and effort to ensure we’re cutting, filling, and finishing in the least wasteful way possible. What scraps we do produce, get reused in other ways that keep them from the landfill.
We’re always striving to do better. Our small team has pulled a dedicated staff member from every department to collaborate on ways to improve our sustainable practices even more, with regular sustainability meetings. We even went so far as to analyze our showroom breakrooms and made the swap from bottled dish soap to a solid dish soap bar!
We’ve put our heads and hearts into crafting bedding that’s cozy for you and gentle on the earth. Because we believe true comfort shouldn’t come at the cost of the planet.
Whether you’re dipping a toe or diving all in, Plastic Free July is for everyone. Here are a few fun, doable ways to get started:
Bring your own bags. Cloth totes are your new best friend. Bonus points if you snag them from a small business.
Ditch plastic wrap. Reusable Bowl Covers, like our favorites from Coast-to-Coast Sustainables do the trick. Plus, they come in so many fun colors, patterns, and sizes.
Go for bar soap. Ditch the plastic bottle and treat yourself to a bar of natural, package-free soap. Pro tip: they make shampoo, conditioner, and shaving bars too.
Choose natural fibers. When it’s time to replace clothes or bedding, look for plastic-free, all-natural options, like ours.
Remember, it’s not about being perfect. It’s about being aware, intentional, and doing the best you can with what you’ve got. Before jumping on to something new, always make sure to check what you already have first! This is the absolute best way to be as sustainable as possible!
Every step you take—whether it’s swapping your toothbrush, rethinking your sheets, or skipping the straw—adds up. It shows businesses what you care about. It helps shift demand. And it reminds us all that we don’t need to wait for someone else to save the planet. We can start right where we are, with the choices we make every day.
Here at Holy Lamb Organics, we’re proud to be part of a community of changemakers. Folks like you who care deeply about what’s under your head night after night.
So, this Plastic Free July, let’s roll up our sleeves, hang our laundry on the line, and keep working toward a cleaner, kinder world.
