How to Choose a Pillow

Choosing the right pillow is essential for a good night’s sleep. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to figure out which one is best suited to your needs!

Whether you’re a side, back, or stomach sleeper, the right pillow can help ensure proper neck support, enhance comfort, and even regulate your body temperature throughout the night. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key considerations and introduce you to some of the best pillow options available at Holy Lamb Organics.

Please note that everyone has varying comfort preferences. Use these suggestions as your guide, but ultimately choose the pillow that you think is right for you.

Why is Your Pillow an Essential Part of Your Sleep System?

A good pillow is more than just a casual comfort item — it’s a crucial component of your overall sleep system. Your sleep system includes everything from your mattress and bed frame to your bedding and, of course, your pillow. Each element plays a significant role in how well you sleep, but your pillow often directly impacts your head, neck, and spinal alignment.

Graphic showing correct pillow to keep spinal alignment

  1. Support and Alignment: The right pillow supports your head and neck, keeping your spine aligned in a neutral position. Poor alignment can lead to neck pain, headaches, and even discomfort in the shoulders and back. A well-chosen pillow ensures that your neck and spine are properly supported, reducing the risk of these issues.
  2. Comfort and Pressure Relief: Your pillow works in tandem with your mattress to provide comfort and pressure relief. While the mattress supports your body, the pillow ensures that your head and neck are cushioned, preventing pressure points from forming. This balance helps you stay comfortable throughout the night, reducing the need to toss and turn.
  3. Temperature Regulation: Pillows made from natural materials like wool have excellent temperature-regulating properties. They help wick away moisture and allow air to circulate, which is essential for maintaining a comfortable sleeping temperature. A pillow that keeps you cool and dry can significantly improve the quality of your sleep.
  4. Hygiene and Health: A clean, hypoallergenic pillow can contribute to better sleep hygiene by reducing exposure to allergens like dust mites and mold. Natural pillows, such as those made from organic wool, are resistant to these allergens, promoting a healthier sleep environment.

By investing in the right pillow, you’re enhancing the effectiveness of your entire sleep setup. It’s a simple—yet powerful—way to improve your sleep quality and overall well-being.

Which pillow is right for me?

Everyone's body has different comfort needs and preferences, so choosing a pillow takes some thought. Think about how you get your best rest - whether you're a side, back, stomach, or sprawled-across-the-bed sleeper. Proper neck support is important too. Let’s go through the options!

The first step in finding the right pillow is understanding the importance of ergonomics. A pillow that provides proper neck and spine alignment can help prevent discomfort, stiffness, and long-term health issues.

Pillows for Side Sleepers

Sleep on your side? You'll probably prefer a thicker, fluffier, pillow that fills the space between your head and the mattress. Everyone is unique when it comes to pillows and personal sleeping habits. However, If you sleep on your side, you need a pillow that provides ample support to keep your spine in alignment.

As a side sleeper, you will need a thicker pillow than a back sleeper. Use the width of your shoulders as a guide: If you have wide shoulders, you'll need a thicker pillow. If you have narrow shoulders, a flatter pillow could be enough. This will keep your head in line with your spine, instead of tilting. You should also have a body pillow to place between your knees in order to keep your spine in a neutral position. This pillow should be on the larger side, in order to keep your hips square.

Orthopedic Neck Pillow in Use
  • Orthopedic Neck Pillow: This pillow was specifically designed with the help of a chiropractor to offer targeted support for your head, neck, and shoulders. This is an excellent choice for side sleepers looking for firm, consistent support.
  • All Natural Wool-filled Bed Pillow: Another good option for side sleepers who prefer a more traditional pillow shape, but still want the supportive benefits of wool. The Wool-Filled Bed Pillow in regular or extra thick is a good choice.
  • Wooly Down Bed Pillow: This zippered pillow can be adjusted to your exact preference, including the addition of extra puffs, which we offer in 3 and 6 oz. quantities. Its moldability allows you to create a bolster for support while sleeping on your side.
  • Wool-wrapped Latex Pillow: A firmer option, this durable pillow is thick and cushiony soft with a springy texture. This pillow is great for people with wider shoulders, as the pillow is firm and has a taller profile than most of our other pillows.
  • All-Natural Body Pillow: A must for side sleepers, a body pillow is placed between the knees and is large enough to drape your arm over. This helps prevents your both shoulders and hips from slumping inward, so you don't wake up with a sore back and shoulders!

Pillows for Back Sleepers

In comparison to side sleepers, back sleepers need slightly more support, but less height, in order to keep your head from being pushed forward. Back sleepers often benefit from a medium to thin pillow that supports the natural curve of the neck, allowing your head to stay in line with your spine.

If you’re a back sleeper, you should look for a pillow that supports your neck, head, and shoulders well, and preferably has a low profile. You can also use a small pillow to put under your knees to help keep pressure off your lower back. However, this should not be done every night as it can shorten your muscles over time.

Holy Lamb Organics Neck Pillow
  • Neck Roll:Use alone or in combination with an All Natural Wool-filled Bed Pillow for a little extra support. The Neck Roll allows your head to rest comfortably in a supine position, while supporting your neck. This may also help with snoring and reduce neck pain.
  • Wooly Down Bed Pillow: Simply remove some puffs from the adjustable Wooly Down Pillow to get it just right as far as how thin you want the pillow. Then utilize its unique malleability to create a bolster to cradle your neck!
  • All Natural Wool-filled Bed Pillow: Choosing this pillow in Light or Perfect provides the right balance of support and softness, cradling your head while maintaining proper alignment. Be sure to sleep with your head high enough on the pillow to support your neck. Sleeping with your head too far down on the pillow will make your head tilt down, arching your neck forward and causing strain.
  • Orthopedic Neck Pillow: The smaller bolstered side of the Orthopedic Neck Pillow supports the S curve in your neck. For those who need thicker neck support, the other side features a larger bolster, so that you can choose which feels best. No matter which side you choose, the middle of the Orthopedic Neck Pillow is left flatter, allowing for the best possible head position and a comfortable cradling sensation.

Pillows for Stomach Sleepers

Sleep on your stomach? Unfortunately sleeping on your stomach tends to be the most disruptive sleep position to your spinal alignment, so it needs extra attention. Stomach sleepers need a thinner, softer pillow to avoid putting strain on the neck. If you sleep like this, you'll need a lighter, flatter pillow. Placing a flat pillow under your stomach may also help to decrease the slouch in your spine.

All Natural Wool Bed Pillow Thicknesses
  • All Natural Wool-filled Bed Pillow: Consider the Light version of the Wool Bed Pillow, which would be ideal for supporting both your head and your stomach, should you choose to place one under your stomach.
  • Wooly Down Bed Pillow: remove some puffs from the adjustable Wooly Down to get it just right.
  • All-Natural Body Pillow: Not just for side sleepers! A body pillow can be perfect for 'leg-up' stomach sleepers. This helps keep some support for your hips, which in turn can alleviate spinal pressure. For narrower hips, consider the Buddy size of our Body Pillow!

Pillows for Combination Sleepers

If you're thinking "What if I'm all of the above?," you're not alone! Many of us at Holy Lamb Organics are combination sleepers, which is why we offer so many varying options for thickness, texture, and firmness.

  • Wooly Down Bed Pillow: If you tend to switch positions throughout the night, the adjustable Wooly Down Bed Pillow might be the perfect choice. This pillow allows you to add or remove wool fill to customize the loft and firmness, making it adaptable to your changing sleep positions. It is also easy to move the fill around, molding the pillow to whatever shape you'd like.
  • Shredded Latex Pillow: The shredded latex pillow, much like the Wooly Down, has a more adjustable fill than our other pillows. It is filled with small pieces of shredded Natural Dunlop Latex, which allows you to mold the pillow how you want it. The soft, springy texture of latex allows for ample support and will last a long time. This pillow also comes with a zipper, so if you find the amount of fill we include feels too firm, you can remove some filling. We have some Clearance Shredded Latex Pillows left! If you miss the clearance ones, don't worry. We also offer Soaring Heart's Organic Shredded Latex Pillows

For Those Seeking Extra Support

For sleepers who enjoy a supportive, yet luxurious feel, the Wool-wrapped Latex Pillow combines the softness of wool with the resilience of latex. This pillow offers excellent support and bounce-back, making it great for those who want a pillow that stays comfortable and supportive throughout the night. However, this pillow is best suited for those who like a firmer texture and a taller height.

For Hot Sleepers

If you tend to sleep hot, any of our Pillows made with Wool would work for you, as they are all designed with temperature regulation in mind. Wool’s natural moisture-wicking properties and breathability help keep you cool and comfortable, reducing the likelihood of night sweats.

For Travel or Kids

The Natural Child's Customizable Pillow is a versatile option that works well for both travel and as a children’s pillow! It’s lightweight, adjustable, and offers the same benefits of our Wooly Down Pillows in a smaller, more manageable size.

If you're looking to introduce a full-size pillow to your child for the first time, we recommend the Natural Child's Wool-Filled Bed Pillow. This light fill option is a great thin starter pillow.

We also offer our classic Travel Pillow, which is the pillow that started it all. This pillow is the perfect size to make it easy to take all-natural comfort with you wherever you go.

Pillows for Neck Support

Is neck support a priority for you? We offer two good options for extra neck support. The Neck Roll provides just the right amount of support for specifically the neck area. Use it on its own, or in combination with your regular bed pillow.

Our Orthopedic Neck Pillow expands on the neck roll concept. It has a bolster along each side, one stuffed slightly more than the other, so that you can choose the exact amount of support you need.

Pillow Compression: Understanding How Your Pillow Will Evolve

Wool pillows offer gentle compression, gradually shaping to your contours without losing their supportive qualities. This natural settling process is normal for many natural materials, and is an indication that your pillow is molding to your body for personalized comfort.

Pillows made solely with wool batting, like our Wool-filled Bed Pillow, will settle within the first few months of regular use as they conform to the weight of your head. This is normal and happens to the best of pillows.

If you’re concerned about compression or are unsure which pillow thickness will suit you best, we recommend the Wooly Down Bed Pillow. It won’t compress as much, and you can easily unzip and re-fluff the wool as needed. You can also customize the fill or replenish it by purchasing extra wool puffs.

If you need an extra thick pillow that keeps its thickness over time, Wool-wrapped Latex Pillow compress very little, as the latex core maintains its size and shape. The wool layer provides the temperature regulating benefits of wool, while letting the latex core do the heavy lifting.

Customizable Comfort: Tailoring Your Pillow to Your Needs

wooly down adjustable bed pillows

One of the unique benefits of Holy Lamb Organics’ Wooly Down Bed Pillows is their customizable nature. This pillow has a zipper access, allowing you to adjust the fill to meet your exact comfort needs. You can add or remove filling to create the perfect loft and firmness for your sleeping style.

This feature also allows you to replenish or replace the filling over time, so that you could effectively make this pillow last forever!

Stay Cool and Comfortable All Night with Wool

Sleeping comfortably often depends on maintaining the right temperature throughout the night. Holy Lamb Organics’ pillows are made from natural materials like organic or domestically-sourced Premium Eco Wool, which is known for its superior temperature regulation properties.

  • Wool's Breathability: Wool naturally wicks moisture away from the body and allows air to circulate, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
  • Hypoallergenic Benefits: Besides temperature regulation, wool is also hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, making these pillows an excellent choice for those with allergies or sensitive skin.
